"On the Run in Nazi Berlin should be mandatory reading: a memoir that reads like a thriller, full of suspense, horror, humor, and the unquenchable determination to survive. An important contribution to the literature that reminds us: never forget." — Jenna Blum, Bestselling author of Those Who Save Us and The Lost Family"[Offers] extraordinary insight... Well-written, readable, and honest, the eyewitness story is enhanced throughout by photographs and documents. This story of this Jewish family touched my heart, and I highly recommend this memoir."— Denise George, Coauthor of The Lost Eleven and Behind Nazi Lines"a grim and gripping story of survival in a most egregious time." --Kirkus Reviews

This should be required reading for all students of history. It’s a front row seat to the sheer desperation and terror of those long ago, horror-filled years. The resourcefulness, ingenuity, and astonishing feats of survival of this incredible human being, Bert Lewyn, are jaw-dropping. Although I’m sure it’s difficult to share, many thanks for documenting a time in history which should never be forgotten. I sincerely hope this story is developed into a movie.
One of the most harrowing accounts of the Nazi era. I literally could not walk the streets of my city without picturing what it would be like to experience his existence. Truly frightening and yet he managed to survive.
I own over 500 Holocaust books and I am glad to add this book to my collection. This is one of thebest, exciting Holocaust books that I have read in some time. This is one of the books that I will readagain in a few months.
A family history found and documented. A vivid depiction of the horror of Nazi Germany and of survival at all odds.
Another great story of a young man on the run living through an era of destruction. You will live though his survival story with incredible detail and utter realism.
Very fast read, with a unique vantage point of a young Jew surviving WW2 from inside the belly of the beast--Nazi Berlin. Couldn't put it down!
Review by Jan Slimming: Bert Lewin's memoir often brought me close to tears. The sheer despair of being separated from ones parents, then not knowing if he would ever see them again, was painful and surely terrifying. His family ripped apart by the Gestapo March 1942 is just one of the stories of Jewish persecution during World War II. This one had me gripped cover to cover and is an eyeopener to the one-sided laws and horrors Jews were subjected to. Lewin's account, though sometimes confused and duplicated, tells of his attempts at survival which relied on friends, luck and coincidences, together with forbidden help from gentiles in Nazi Germany. There's little sunshine in his dark days of living rough in bombed-out Berlin, often with only a blanket and little food, but it is worth reading to the very end, especially for the notes which lead you to discover the fate of the others who were instrumental in his survival. This is the first book I have read on this subject and I already have another lined up. It's by Peter Bein, entitled Maxwell's Suitcase. I suspect it is similar, but each true story is unique..., unfortunately.
