I’ve been a UX designer for over 20 years (since before we were called UX designers) and I also teach the UI/UX Design Certificate Program at a local design school. My class is geared mainly toward aspiring and junior-level UXers, so I started out reading Everett’s book with my students in mind. His book does provide an excellent framework for explaining what makes a design “intuitive” and helping newer UXers create designs that are easy to use, but I was surprised at how much practical know-how I got from the book that I could immediately apply to my own work and consulting projects.I like Everett’s definition of an intuitive UI (“If your target users must resort to reason, memorizing, experimenting, seeking help, or training, your UI isn’t intuitive by definition.” Uh-oh...I can think of a few of my designs that don't meet these criteria), and he gave me some helpful new vocabulary I can use in design presentations to project stakeholders.Everett’s “Eight Attributes of Intuitive UI” is a modern set of principles that we can all strive to design to and test our designs against (I love the idea of using them to conduct heuristic reviews). He includes lots of great screenshots/photos of good and bad design examples in the book, plus design exercises and challenges at the end of every chapter (and how he’d solve them), which is a great way for people to apply what they’re learning from the book. I plan to steal a few of these design exercises to use in my next class. :)

I have a background in Human Factors and have always found standards and principles important in evaluating designs. I've enjoyed Everett McKay's other books as well, and this one is straight to the point.This book provides eight attributes with many heuristics and examples when a UI works and when it doesn't. This also lets you know when you can break the rules as well, which can be useful if well thought out. This is a great read and for use as a reference and I recommend you add it to your library.

This is an excellent UI design resource. The eight attributes of intuitive UI are laid out in easy to understand paragraphs with great examples. What really helps drive the concepts home for me are the non-software examples. I highly recommend this book to anyone involved in software development. I purchased a copy of Everett's book for everyone on our software development team.

First of all, everybody uses the "intuitive UI" expression, but actually, quite a lot of designer can define objectively what it is. Everett McKay really knows, he defines perfectly. As a UX designer, I learned a lot from this book, for example how to use this approach in heuristic evaluations. Quite useful for all level of UX practitioners and for web designers as well.

Many UI design books seem to focus on the cognitive theory behind usability or on fairly sophisticated usability studies - these books certainly have their place - but many individuals or teams do not have the resources to translate this into practical guidelines. If you fall into this group; this book is for you.Everett has provided easy to follow steps that can be put into practice immediately. Following the steps he outlines, you will see improvements on day 1. One particularly helpful aspect is the abundance of real-world examples of both good and bad design. I found that this helped cement the concepts he introduced. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
