I bought this book because I'm fascinated with the idea of dark matter and because I'm interested in science. I'm NOT a scientist -- just a fan. I'm not sure what audience the author was aiming for, and maybe I'm not his demographic. I found the story-telling sloppy though interesting. There were quite a few loose ends that never got tied up and personal details that seemed not to add to the narrative nor have much of a reason for being told. Panek goes into some (for me) fairly technical detail that I found it just as well to skim as it meant nothing to me. Still, there was interesting information here. For me personally, the book could have been half as long and still told me the interesting bits, and probably have told them more clearly. I think that Panek is perhaps so close to his subject that he makes remarks that for me at least, are too cryptic to give the information out clearly.Having read the book, I'm still not sure I know much about what "dark matter" and "dark energy" are, or whether anyone else does either, but maybe that's just me.

If your interest is to understand the concepts of dark matter, dark energy, and the age of the Universe, this book is not for you. Rather the book focuses on the personalities and history involved in those discoveries rather than a comprehendible description of the discoveries themselves. The book launches into the minutiae of irrelevant events in the personal lives of the scientists. The book could have been improved by a glossary fully defining such terms as cosmological constant, 1a supernovae, and equation of state.

Dark matter and dark energy have been enlisted these dark entities as catch-alls to account for a lot of what we do not understand about the past and future of the universe. "The 4% Universe" is a stylishly written account of the development of these concepts, the researchers, and of the tensions and the politics in astronomy and particle physics that have enabled our present level of incomplete understanding. The dichotomy between theoreticians and experimentalists pales against the one-time rivalry, often intolerance, between quantum physicists and astronomers. Panek's frank and chatty style makes a work of exhaustive research readable and paints a memorable and life-like picture of radio telescopy pioneers, the domestic duty juggling pragmatism and cool intellect of Vera Rubin, through a pantheon of hard-working physicists to the Nobel laureates, Perlmutter and Schmidt. Panek's characterisations are priceless, as are his expositions of the deals and behind-the-scenes lobbying. The Notes, Works Cited and Index are thorough and helpful.The story of quasars, supernovae, standard candles, the inflationary universe, the accelerating universe, the many phenomena and theories that link astronomy to cosmology: these are all covered by Panek carefully with minimal technical contortions. The historical account is what makes this book, other books may be an easier read to clarify the technical aspects of dark matter and dark energy. It was published before the Nobel Prize was awarded to Schmidt and Perlmutter, but this takes little from the account. It would be a treat if Panek tackled these topics again in a decade or so, even as a revised edition.

With amazement I read The 4 Percent Universe -- Dark matter, dark energy and the race to discover the rest of reality, a non-fiction book by science writer, Rickard Panek. He covers the race to discover reality between a group of physicists and astronomers, which in the process birthed the science of cosmology. Read the epilogue first. In there on page 242 Panek says, “In early 2010 . . . the results arrived bearing the latest refinements of the numbers that define our universe. It was 13.75 billion years old . . . . it was flat, consisting of 72.8 percent dark energy, 22.7 percent dark mater, and 4.56 percent baryonic matter (the stuff of us) – an exquisitely precise accounting of the depth of our ignorance. The astronomers who set out to write the final chapter in the history of the universe had to content themselves instead with a more modest conclusion: to be continued.” Isn't it amazing? We don't know what dark energy and dark matter are, and they compose most of our universe. Of course, we now have to think about parallel universes and multi-verses. Brian Greene's new book The Hidden Reality addresses these, and I recommend following up with it.

Extraordinarily well documented history of the concepts of Dark Matter and Dark Energy and the cosmologists who developed the theories, proofs, and publications over generations. But if you want a quicker view of what constitutes the 96% of the Universe we can't see, you would probably be better off finding a different book. This covers the trials, tribulations, in-fighting, hassles, problems, contortions, and exasperations that all serious competing researchers in any field suffer in order to make great contributions to human understanding. It's actually more about the people and the processes than the results of their efforts.

I really enjoyed this book, but you should go into it knowing that it's not a "hard science" book. Instead, what this book does is tells the story of how the science of dark matter/dark energy has progress up to this point. For each component it weaves a story of the scientists and the science, letting you glimpse at how they got into the field and why they stayed and struggled for so long to gather the data which would push the field a tiny bit further as well as looking at what those struggles were. Not only does it give a nice overview of where the dark matter and dark energy field is today, but it provides an important reminder that science isn't set in stone and that it isn't always easy.If you're interested in the story check this book out, you won't be disappointed. If you're interested in the science, better look elsewhere.
