About the Author

J. François-Campbell is an accomplished costume maker and theatrical tailor with more than thirty years experience in the garment industry. She was born into a family of tailors and seamstresses, and has been sewing since the age of seven. After studying at the London College of Fashion and Central St Martin’s Art School, Francois-Campbell was apprenticed as a costume maker, and has been making costumes for major West End productions and films ever since. She is currently employed by the Royal Opera House, where she works on costumes for principal opera singers and ballet dancers, and mentors students and apprentices. Outside the opera house, Francois-Campbell spends her spare time advising schools and online companies on children’s historical clothing. This is her first book for GMC Publications.

This is the most useful sewing book I have in my library. Mostly it lays on my work table so I can consult it often.I have been sewing since I was a child & have strong skills but this book has suggested better techniques ormethods that are quicker than what I had been using. It is written clearly. I recommend it to those wishingto learn to alter/ tailor as a business and for those who want to improve their home sewing skills. I willprobably gift it to several people.

I can’t believe a book written about alterations does not address men’s casual slacks nor jeans. Perhaps, they are not important in England, but in the USA, they are a primary garment.The book has good graphics and addresses formal clothes well, but not how to shorten or lengthen casual pants. Nor does it address taking in the waist of jeans or casual pants with safety stitched waist and side seam. Topics it did cover were done ok. This book was not useful for me.

I bought this in order to alter a suite I bought as a gift on Amazon. It turned out great, and the instructions are simple, clear, and well illustrated.It saved me a lot of money, and I am so proud that I could do a professional-looking job.

Excellent complete reference guide for all of your tailoring needs with lots of great tips and tricks. The illustrations are awesome and the guide is well written and easy to follow. I would definitely recommend this book as part of your sewing and tailoring arsenal!

I thought from the description that I would be able to alter my favorite jackets, pants and party clothes that are too big. Instead, there is limited advice about small darts and seams. There is no information about how to alter clothes that have shoulders that are too wide, pants that are very big, etc. I am so disappointed. Also thought I might find some advice about lingerie...but this book was written by a man, and there is more about men's alterations than about women's! I have been sewing from patterns for over 50 years. Hope there is a book out there for me! This is not it!

This books has really helped me learn more about sewing with basic stitching, different hem techniques and basic education on tailoring.

This is the perfect book for a practicing alterationist/seamstress. I use this book all the time. Quick solutions to alter clothing.
