The author elucidates so much about everyday weather in a readable and engrossing way. Highly recommended.

Great facts and entertainingly written! Easy read.

This book has a lot of really interesting stuff. But the author went with a very small publisher, and it shows. He needed a good editor and didn't have one.To summarize, here are my issues with the book: * Significant amount of extraneous content * Factual errors * Spelling errorsExtraneous Content-----------------------The author spends a number of pages discussing his childhood and other personal experiences which may only be tangentially related to the subject matter. He also likes to quote poetry and wax philosophic. A good amount of content could (and should) have been omitted from the book. An experienced editor would have asked him to remove it, producing a leaner, meaner, and more impactful volume.Factual Errors----------------1. The author states that there is no atmosphere on the moon, "not even a wisp." This is incorrect. The moon has an atmosphere. It's pretty negligible, but it does exist.2. The author states that the official boundary of outer space is at 50 miles. He mentions as an aside that Europe uses 62 miles. The reality is that the US Air Force and NASA both award astronaut badges for their personnel who go beyond 50 miles, but the rest of the United States and the world, most scientists and engineers, and even some legal entities consider 62 miles to be the official boundary of outer space. I worked with satellites and own a space handbook published by the US Air Force which states that outer space begins at 62 miles (100km). The 50 miles figure is solely for awarding astronaut badges.3. The author states that 517 million years is "less than a 10th" of 4.5 billion years. A 10th would be 450 million years, and 517 is most definitely not less than 450.Spelling Errors-----------------* "Phase" instead of "Faze"* "Poured" instead of "Pored"* "Augers" instead of "Augurs"Note these are all correct spellings for homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings and are spelled differently).Conclusion-------------So even though this book was interesting, it was a bit of a chore to read because of the extraneous content, and was distracting because of the factual and spelling errors. And these are only the ones I noticed based on my own personal knowledge. I wonder what else in the book was incorrect that I didn't catch.Kudos for doing a good job of explaining chaos theory as it pertains to weather.Recommended, but read at your own peril.

I enjoyed this book. Christopher Dewdney wrote a fascinating and accessible book about Earth’s atmosphere and weather, including a fair amount of history. He uses a conversational tone but with what I felt to be some haughtiness, but this didn’t significantly affect my enjoyment of the book. I found this book to be much better than Windswept by Marq de Villiers. I recommend Dewdney’s effort for anyone interested in science.Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley for review purposes.
